Hans-Malte studied Jazz with Ferdinand Povel at the Hochschule für Künste in Amsterdam. He was then awarded a Jazz felloship by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) which allowed him to continue his studies in New York with Dick Oats, Rich Perry and others.

Latin Music productions with Crispin Fernandez and Sergio Vargas for a TV station in the Dominican Republic followed. Among Hans-Malte´s teachers are also Herb Geller, John Rucco, Bernd Homann, Eric Lier and Benny Bailey.

Malte was a member of the National Jazz Orchestra, played with the HR-Big Band, JON, Gottfried Böttger and the Glenn Miller Orchestra and participated in several musical and theatre productions. Over the last years, Malte has performed regularly with groups like the JazzHaus Orchestra Hamburg, the Nord-West Big Band, the Avalon Casino Kings, the Septetto Miramar, Norbert Susemihl and Jazz Componium. He can also be heard with his own Trio "Spirit-Up", featuring Ack van Rooyen and Henk Sprenger.

Hans-Malte became a member of Addi Münsters Old Merrytale Jazzband in 2004. He also teaches at the University of Lüneburg, his home town, where he is engaged as Big Band and Combo leader.
